Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
The 2000 census confirmed that more grandparents are raising their grandchildren than at any time in America's recent history. Even under the best of circumstances, this puts enormous pressures on the grandparents. In this program, we visit with grandparents who have assumed this role and developed coping strategies, such as participating in support groups that enable them to get through a potentially trying experience.
Many grandparents will find that the first order of business is maintaining their physical and emotional health. Caring for young children is a demanding responsibility, for both the body and mind, so keeping active and involved is critical. "You have to take care of you, otherwise you can't take care of the child." Older grandparents should motivate themselves to take on new hobbies, or join their local YMCA.
Respite services and support groups are also essential resources for grandparents raising their grandchildren. Seniors in these situations are encouraged to reach out and ask for help in dealing with the stress and emotional duress that can result. Feelings of guilt, resentment, and failure are very common, but it's important to know that you're not facing this alone. Establish friendships and connections, and take some time out for you.
Finally, grandparents should seek legal counsel to ensure that they can obtain total control for their grandchildren. Often times these circumstances come about from very negative family situations, and it is important that the grandparents provide as much stability and structure for their little ones.
